Referee
The narrator or voice of the game. I always love watching the referee drag injured players (who lost a fight) off the ice.
The Fans
Blades of Steel gives us, the fans, what we want to see. Scoring fighting and end to end action!
Fighting
Fighting has always been one of the most entertaining aspects of the game. Especially in 2-player mode! Winning a fight creates a chance to score, while the loser is pulled off the ice by the referee. This also creates a brief (in comparison to real time) power-play for the team that won the fight. I can never tell the difference between 5 on 5 and a short-handed situation.
Fall
"AHHHHH". A player gets knocked off his feet if he loses a fight, gets muscled off the puck by an opponent or runs into the other teams goalie.
Skating
The player with possession of the puck will bear a flashing coat during play.
Shoot
The direction or accuracy of a players shot is determined by the location of the arrow in the opponents net, which flickers back and forth between the posts.
Victory
Teams will celebrate after scoring a goal or winning the game.
Angry Goaltender
In this game, the goalies tend to lose their focus very easily. You would think they'd be able to show a little more composure after a goal than that!
Goalie
In a game of angles, the outcome is sadly determine NOT by the skill of the athlete, but by a scrolling red arrow seen inside the net. Tip. When the offensive team is in your end, focus in on your goaltender; NOT your players outside of the crease.
Penalty Shot: Break-Dancing Goaltender
You'll only have a split second to anticipate where the puck is going after the player has taken a shot.
Penalty Shot: Shooter
Toggle your controller after the shot to determine where the puck goes. It's really more of a "guessing game" when you're up against the computer.
Zamboni Driver
The Zamboni cleans the ice during each intermission....allegedly. There's no way of actually knowing whether or not he's actually out there during the intermission, but I'm just assuming. He or she also cleans the ice during team selection.
